As we shower our friends and loved ones with gifts this holiday season, let us not forget to help those that are less fortunate. The Christmas season is the perfect time to say thank you to favorite charities which lend a helping hand to those in need. Listed here are five Toronto-based organizations to consider.
TEAM Dog Rescue
The main goal at TEAM Dog Rescue (which stands for Together Every Animal Matters) is to pull as many dogs as possible from high-kill animal shelters. Each animal is then placed in a loving foster home until a forever home can be secured. The rescue also partners with the International Fund for Animal Welfare Northern Dog Project to provide veterinary care for pets in underserved areas. You can help TEAM Dog Rescue this holiday season by becoming a dog foster, volunteering to transport or perform home checks, or by making a donation of money or dog supplies.
Save Our Scruff
Save Our Scruff is a Toronto-based rescue that focuses on saving all dogs in need, no matter the age, breed, behavioral issue, or medical problem. This rescue is foster-based, and places the animals it saves in temporary foster care while searching for the perfect forever home. What sets Save Our Scruff apart from other rescues is that all potential adopters are considered, no matter how many hours the family is away from home or their current living siutation. You can help Save Our Scruff this winter by fostering a dog, becoming a casual volunteer, escorting dogs on plane rides, hosting a fundraising event, or donating money and supplies.
Black Dog Rescue
A relatively new organization, Black Dog Rescue was founded in 2015 and primarily rescues animals from northern Quebec. To date, Black Dog Rescue has saved more than 55 dogs, which are placed into foster care and rehabilitated. The rescue is run solely by volunteers and foster families, and relies entirely on donations. You can get involved this holiday season by volunteering your time, money, or specialized skills to help this worthy rescue grow!
Toronto Humane Society
At the Toronto Humane Society, animals of all species are cared for by the loving staff. In addition to sheltering dogs, cats, and small animals, the shelter provides low-cost spay/neuter services, performs trap-neuter-return for feral cats, provides low-cost vaccinations, and offers dog training classes. You can help this organization by donating, volunteering, fostering, or giving the gift of a Humane Society membership.
Toronto Cat Rescue
The Toronto Cat Rescue is a no-kill facility that seeks to rescue homeless, sick, or injured cats. Specializing primarily in situations of neglect, abuse, and certain euthanasia, the Toronto Cat Rescue is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. There are many ways to help cats in need this holiday season. A donation as small as $35 covers vaccines and a veterinary examination for one cat while the rescue’s wish list includes everything from towels and toilet paper to kitty litter and food.
